Dina Asher-Smith, a prominent British sprinter, has spoken out about the persisting issue of racism in athletics and emphasized the need for more leaders akin to England manager Gareth Southgate in the sport.
During a roundtable discussion titled 'A Seat At The Table,' Asher-Smith discussed the need for greater diversity and inclusivity in athletics in the UK, citing her unique perspective as someone deeply involved in the global sport. She expressed concerns about biases and racial disparities, calling for a culture shift within the sport.
Asher-Smith stressed that the issues of diversity and racism persist in her field, and although competence should be the primary criteria for roles, there's a lack of representation beyond certain positions, particularly in high-level coaching and administration. She underscored the importance of examining assumptions, offering opportunities for growth, and challenging preconceived notions to foster a more inclusive environment.
In the conversation, Ugo Monye also highlighted the significance of allies like Gareth Southgate, praising his ability to connect with his team and lobby for important causes. Asher-Smith echoed this sentiment, commending Southgate for his allyship and empathy, which she believes are crucial elements missing in the push for diversity within athletics.
