Diamond League: Sha'Carri Richardson breaks the 100m meeting record

Posted : 06 May 2023
At the first Diamond League of the season in Doha, Sha'Carri Richardson broke the 100m meeting record, placing Dina Asher-Smith third.

The previous meeting mark was 10.80 seconds established by American Tori Bowie, whose passing at the age of 32 was confirmed on Wednesday. American Richardson, 23, smashed that time with a time of 10.76 seconds.

Jamaica's Shericka Jackson came in second after Britain's Asher-Smith, who ran 10.98 seconds.

"I'm so blessed and thankful, I feel at peace," said Richardson, 23.

"All I do is the best I do and I'm excited to do it."

Asher-Smith said: "The whole point about my season is to race against the best and I did that tonight.

"I am really happy with my race, third place is a good start and the time is decent."

Later on in the show, Fred Kerley overcame the field to win the men's 200-meter race.

Olympic 100-meter silver medalist American Kerley lagged as the pack came around the bend but surged in the last meters to finish in 19.92 seconds, followed by fellow countryman Kenny Bednarek and Canadian Aaron Brown.

Kenyan Faith Kipyegon, a two-time Olympic champion, won the women's 1500-meter race in three minutes, 58.57 seconds.

In the men's discus earlier, Lawrence Okoye of Britain and Nick Percy of Britain placed fifth and ninth, respectively.

Holly Bradshaw, who won bronze in the Olympics, was forced to drop out of the women's pole vault due to "Achilles and calf stiffness" during the warm-up.

The British athlete would have been participating in his first match after sustaining a hamstring injury in the summer.
