Chris Froome out of Israel-Premier Tech team for Tour de France

Posted : 24 June 2023
Chris Froome, the four-time Tour de France winner, will not have the opportunity to participate in the 2023 edition of the race as he has been excluded from his Israel - Premier Tech team.

Froome had expressed his desire to ride in the Tour as his main goal for the year and had hoped to win a stage after coming close on Alpe d'Huez in the previous year. However, his exclusion means he will not have the chance to pursue his ambitions.

Froome's performance on Stage 12 last year, where he finished in third place, was his best stage finish in the Tour de France since 2018. This achievement was particularly significant as he had recovered from a serious injury sustained in a high-speed crash in 2019.

Froome had been working hard to push himself further this year, overcoming a tendon problem and training at an altitude camp to prepare for the race.

Expressing his disappointment about not being selected, Froome mentioned equipment issues that prevented him from demonstrating his full potential in the races assigned to him.

Mechanical problems have indeed hindered Froome's progress this season, as he was unable to keep up with the leaders on a mountain stage in his last race and had to change bikes multiple times during the CIC - Mont Ventoux.

Despite the setback, Froome remains determined and committed to the sport. He respects his team's decision and plans to take some time to refocus on his objectives for the rest of the season.

Froome intends to return to the Tour de France in 2024. In the meantime, he will continue his pursuit of success and work towards bouncing back.

Israel - Premier Tech's team manager, Kjell Carlstrom, explained that selecting the Tour de France team was a challenging decision, but they carefully considered the performance objectives and roles necessary to compete for stage wins.

With a strong and deep rider group, they had to make difficult choices and ultimately selected eight riders who they believe are best suited to fulfill their objectives.

The 2023 Tour de France is set to begin on July 1st.
