On the opening day of powerlifting at the Paris Paralympics, China's women showcased their dominance with standout performances. Guo Lingling set a new world record in the up to 45kg weight class, lifting 123kg, surpassing her previous record of 121kg set earlier in the year. Lingling’s performance outshone Britain’s Zoe Newson, who finished in second place with a lift of 109kg. The event, held at La Chapelle Arena, saw Lingling’s success contribute to China maintaining its lead atop the overall medal standings.
Lingling expressed her excitement about the achievement, noting the inspiring atmosphere of the stadium despite the modest crowd size. She attributed her success to the substantial investment by the Chinese government in athlete training, asserting that such support ensures China's continued prominence in the gold medal tally.
Earlier in the day, fellow Chinese powerlifter Cui Zhe set a Paralympic record in the up to 41kg category, lifting 119kg. This victory marked a significant milestone for Zhe, who will turn 38 in December and had previously secured four silver medals in past Games. Zhe emphasized her unwavering faith and determination, reflecting on the long journey to achieving her gold medal goal.
In the men’s competitions, Jordan’s Omar Qarada defended his title in the up to 49kg category with a lift of 181kg. Kazakhstan’s David Degtyarev also retained his title in the up to 54kg class, narrowly edging out Cuba’s Pablo Ramirez. Degtyarev highlighted his rigorous preparation since the Tokyo Games, expressing the significance of his achievements in both competitions.
