Caster Semenya vows to fight discrimination and embrace identity
Posted : 07 November 2023
Two-time Olympic champion Caster Semenya, known for her 800m prowess, has taken a firm stance against discrimination related to differences of sexual development (DSD). Born with these differences, Semenya has been required to take testosterone-reducing drugs to compete in female track events.
She is determined to challenge the discrimination athletes with hyperandrogenism face, focusing on "winning battles against the authorities" instead of pursuing more medals. Her aim is to assert the rights of those who, like her, have faced adversity due to their unique characteristics.
Though competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics is no longer a personal goal, Semenya remains unwavering in her determination to fight for equality.
Semenya firmly believes that being a woman is not determined by the differences one may possess. With two Olympic gold medals from 2012 and 2016 and three world championships in the 800m distance, she emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and the assertion of her identity.
In her view, embracing her womanhood means accepting all aspects of herself, no matter how different they may be. Last year, Semenya participated in the 5,000m at the World Championships in Oregon, though she fell short of qualifying for the final. Her determination to fight for what she believes in continues to define her journey in the world of athletics.
