Burkina Faso's Zango wins first-ever triple jump gold medal at World Athletics Championships

Posted : 22 August 2023
Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso achieved a historic milestone on Monday as he secured his nation's first-ever gold medal at the World Athletics Championships by triumphing in the triple jump event.

In his fifth attempt, the 30-year-old athlete leaped an impressive 17.64 meters to outperform his competitors in Budapest, Hungary.

With a beaming smile, Zango conveyed his elation to reporters, stating, "Look at my big, big, big smiling mouth. It tells you everything. I had so many difficulties and doubts, I have been struggling a lot. I had to travel a very long way to get this gold medal."

Expressing his pride in fulfilling his commitment, Zango said, "I am proud to be the man who keeps his word. I promised to make history and I did it tonight."

Zango, ranked as the second-best in the world, had been on the verge of claiming gold for a while. He previously won bronze at the 2019 World Athletics Championships and secured silver at the 2022 edition. Additionally, he clinched a bronze medal at the 2022 Tokyo Olympics.

Anticipating the celebratory atmosphere in his homeland, Zango shared, "I cannot imagine the level of celebration in my country when I go back home, but I'm going to start the celebrations in Budapest."

Considering the challenges faced by his nation, Zango viewed his victory as an opportunity to spread positivity, remarking, "We have some troubles in our country now and it is an incredible mission to bring some positive emotions to them."

Cuba's Lazaro Martinez earned the silver medal with a leap of 17.41 meters, narrowly surpassing fellow countryman Cristian Napoles, who secured the bronze with a jump measuring 17.40 meters.
