British cyclist Pidcock warns of downhill risks following Mader's tragic crash

Posted : 28 June 2023
Following the tragic death of Swiss cyclist Gino Mader in a high-speed crash during the Tour de Suisse, British rider Tom Pidcock reflects on the risks involved in downhill descents.

Pidcock, who won a stage in last year's Tour de France, admits that Mader's death deeply affected him. He acknowledges the dangers inherent in cycling and recognizes that while efforts can be made to mitigate risks, they can never be completely eliminated.

Mader, a member of the Bahrain Victorious team, crashed during the descent of the Albula Pass in the Tour de Suisse. Pidcock's teammate, Magnus Sheffield, also crashed separately at the same corner and suffered a concussion.

Pidcock expresses the emotional impact the incident had on the cycling community, particularly Mader's teammates and family. He emphasizes that descending is an integral part of the sport and that accidents like this are rare but can still occur.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in professional cycling. Pidcock's team manager at Ineos, Rod Ellingworth, had signed Mader when he was in charge of the Bahrain team.

Ellingworth highlights the importance of collaboration between the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) and race organizers to enhance safety measures.

He acknowledges the inherent danger in the sport, particularly in mountainous regions, but emphasizes the collective responsibility to prioritize safety and work towards continuous improvement.

While Pidcock will be participating in this year's Tour de France and aims to win mountain stages, he acknowledges the presence of risks.

The sport of cycling has a unique allure due to its connection with mountains and nature, but the tragic accidents serve as a reminder of the ongoing need to enhance safety measures and promote rider well-being.
