British 1500m champion Wightman faces injury-disrupted season, struggles to defend title

Jake Wightman, the reigning 1500m champion from Britain, will not be able to defend his title at the upcoming World Championships in Budapest due to an injury-disrupted season. Wightman, who surprised everyone by winning gold in Eugene last year by overtaking Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, has faced challenges this year.
Despite his victory at the previous World Championships, Wightman suffered a stress fracture in his foot earlier this year, forcing him to miss the UK Championships and remaining sidelined for the entire season. Although he was still guaranteed a spot in Budapest as the defending champion, Wightman has made the difficult decision not to participate.
In an Instagram post, Wightman expressed his disappointment, stating that he had always believed he had enough time to fully recover from his injury. Unfortunately, time has run out, and he has accepted that he will not be able to compete at the World Championships.
Wightman acknowledged the risks of rushing his recovery, which could potentially jeopardize his Olympic year.
This decision follows his recent withdrawal from the Diamond League meet in Lausanne, which was supposed to mark his comeback race. Wightman's focus now shifts to prioritizing his recovery and preparing for the upcoming Olympic year, where he aims to make a strong impact.
