Boston Marathon: Kenyan Mary Ngugi criticizes "greedy" drug cheats
Posted : 20 April 2023
The long-distance specialist, who came in ninth place in the Boston Marathon on Monday, has suffered both financially and emotionally as a result of a drug-using athlete.
Ngugi had her best Boston result in 2021, when she placed in third place originally before moving up to second place after fellow Kenyan and champion Diana Kipyokei was retroactively disqualified and given a six-year suspension for taking illegal drugs.
"That race meant so much because I'd come from a hard year. I had lost my contract," Ngugi said.
"I was so happy to finish third, so imagine what it would have meant for me to finish second. That is something that I can never get back."
In this year's race, which commemorated ten years after a terrorist assault left three spectators dead and hundreds more wounded, the men's and women's event winners received prize money totaling $150,000. But after that, there was a noticeable decline, with the second-place finisher taking home $75,000, third place collecting $40,000, and fourth place receiving $25,000.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Ngugi thinks the events of 2021 also cost her financially.
