Evans Chebet of Kenya won the Boston Marathon and successfully defended his title, with two-time Olympic winner Eliud Kipchoge finishing in sixth.
Compatriot Kipchoge finished 3:29 behind Chebet in second place after two hours, five minutes, and 54 seconds.
In his previous 18 marathons, Kipchoge has only suffered defeat three times.
Hellen Obiri of Kenya won the women's race in 2:21.38 while racing in just her second marathon.
Chebet is the first male to win the Boston championship since 2008 and only the sixth man in history overall.
In the wheelchair race for men, Switzerland's Marcel Hug won his sixth Boston title, and in the women's competition, local favorite Susannah Scaroni triumphed.
On Sunday, memorials were held in the city to commemorate 10 years since the Boston Marathon bombing, which left three people dead and 280 wounded.
