Following in the illustrious footsteps of his father, former Tour de France champion and five-time Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins, 18-year-old Ben Wiggins is steadily forging his own unique path. Marking a significant milestone in his fledgling career, Ben clinched a silver medal in the junior men's individual time trial at the Cycling World Championships in Glasgow on Friday.
Despite falling just four seconds behind the leader at the final intermediate time check, Ben Wiggins had to ultimately settle for the second spot as the Australian contender Oscar Chamberlain surged ahead to claim the gold, creating a significant gap in the final stretch.
Reflecting on his achievement, Ben Wiggins expressed his contentment, stating, "A World Championship medal, I can't be disappointed. It's been the biggest goal of mine all year. And to do it in the UK was really good, getting all the cheers on the road was amazing."
Oscar Chamberlain dominated the concluding ascent, securing victory with a time of 28:29.62, a remarkable 24 seconds ahead of Ben Wiggins. Germany's Louis Leidert rounded out the podium, while Jacob Bush, another compatriot of Wiggins, secured a commendable fifth position.
Acknowledging the legacy of his father's remarkable cycling career, Ben shared his aspiration to excel in time trialling, an area where his father was exceptionally accomplished. He admitted, "Obviously, we know how good my dad was at time trialling. So it's always been something I've wanted to be good at."
Despite the weight of expectations due to his illustrious lineage, Ben Wiggins remains pragmatic and determined. He addressed the comparisons, stating, "I've had good results but with the name, people still compare me and expect me to be a Tour de France winner now! That's not going to happen. I think I've shown today what I can really do."
