Belgian cyclist Wout van Aert leaves Tour de France final week to be with wife, who's about to give birth

Posted : 20 July 2023
Wout van Aert, the Belgian cyclist who won the green jersey at last year's Tour de France, has decided to leave this year's race in its final week to be with his wife, who is about to give birth.

In a video shared by his team Jumbo–Visma, Van Aert explained the situation and expressed that it's time for him to be by his wife's side as they expect the imminent arrival of their child. With four stages remaining, he departs the Tour.

Although Van Aert couldn't replicate his extraordinary performance from last year when he won three stages and claimed the points classification, he expressed mixed feelings about the results.

Nonetheless, he cherished the experience of riding alongside his teammates and fighting for their goals. Despite not making it to the final stage on the Champs-Elysees, Van Aert had no regrets about his decision to prioritize his family.

He had always intended to leave the Tour if his wife needed him, and with her nearing labor, the decision became clear. Van Aert shared the news with his teammates, who wholeheartedly supported his choice. He expressed confidence in their abilities to perform well for the remainder of the Tour.

Despite his early departure, Jumbo–Visma remains at the top of the team rankings, 15 minutes and 15 seconds ahead of Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates. Van Aert currently sits fourth in the green jersey standings, with 154 points, trailing the runaway leader Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck by 169 points.
