Bayelsa State wins maiden Engr. Habu Gumel National Open Weightlifting Championship

Bayelsa State has once again demonstrated its growing credentials in weightlifting as the state’s contingent emerged winners of the maiden Engr. Habu Gumel National Open Weightlifting Championship held in Abuja.


The three-day competition, which took place from Sunday, December 1, to Tuesday, December 3, saw Bayelsa outperform 17 other states across the country, as well as the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), to claim the top spot.

The "Glory of All Lands" team secured a total of 30 medals to finish first on the overall medals table, while Oyo State placed a distant second with 12 medals.


Delta State, which had previously dominated weightlifting events at the 2022 National Sports Festival and the National Youth Games in September this year, finished third with 21 medals.


Bayelsa State clinched 17 gold, 11 silver, and 2 bronze medals to secure their victory. Oyo State recorded 9 gold and 3 bronze medals, while Delta State earned 6 gold, 9 silver, and 6 bronze medals, totaling 21.


Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Osun, Rivers, Cross River, and Ogun States occupied the 4th to 10th positions with 15, 6, 21, 19, 3, 3, and 4 medals, respectively.


The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) came 11th with 13 medals, while the Nigeria Police Force placed 12th with 12 medals. Bauchi took the 13th position with 3 medals, and Ekiti State ranked 14th with 6 medals.


States without medals included Nasarawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Zamfara.


No state from the South East region participated in the championship.


Bayelsa’s dominance at the championship underscores the state’s commitment to nurturing athletic excellence and serves as a promising stepping stone for the upcoming National Sports Festival.
