Baroness Grey-Thompson advocates Commonwealth Games preservation despite 2026 withdrawal, resolving Victorian disputes

Posted : 25 August 2023
Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson emphasizes the importance of preserving the Commonwealth Games despite the withdrawal of the 2026 host. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is currently focusing on identifying a new host for the 2026 Games after resolving disputes with the Victorian government.

Following the withdrawal of the Australian state as hosts due to escalating costs, a settlement was reached last week in which the Victorian government agreed to pay £190 million to the CGF. Meanwhile, Alberta, the sole confirmed potential bidder for the 2030 Games, has suspended its bid.

Although the search for a new host by the CGF is underway, the process is still in its early stages. A spokesperson for the CGF explains that their priority is to secure a solution for the 2026 Games that benefits athletes and the broader Commonwealth sports community.

The CGF is encouraged by the global support and enthusiasm for the Games expressed over recent weeks and aims to translate this interest into a concrete plan.

Initially, Victoria had intended to host a 12-day multi-hub regional event. However, the projected cost significantly exceeded estimates by approximately £2.6 billion (5 billion Australian dollars). As a result, the state's premier, Daniel Andrews, decided against investing up to £3.6 billion (7 billion Australian dollars) in the event.

The CGF further stated that the multi-hub regional model for hosting was ultimately more costly than traditional approaches.
