The Tour de France has announced that Barcelona will host the start of the prestigious cycling race in 2026, marking the third time in its century-long history that the event will begin in Spain. This decision follows recent Grand Departs in Copenhagen for 2022, Bilbao in 2023, and the upcoming start from Florence in 2024.
Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni attended the announcement, expressing the city's excitement to showcase the newly renovated Sagrada Familia during the 2026 Tour start. ASO director Christian Prudhomme emphasized that while the Tour will continue to honor its traditional roots by visiting smaller towns and villages, Barcelona offers a prestigious setting for the 113th edition of the race.
Prudhomme highlighted Barcelona's status as a hub of sport and culture, envisioning two complete stages within Catalonia and a third stage starting there before crossing into France. He anticipates Barcelona's international appeal will enhance the Tour's global viewership, affirming that such Grand Departs elevate the race's profile worldwide.
The Tour de France, known for its historic starts in various cities across Europe, previously launched from San Sebastian in 1992 and Bilbao in 2023. Following Barcelona in 2026, the 2024 edition will conclude in Nice on July 21, deviating from its usual route due to Paris Olympics preparations.
