Posted : 15 May 2023
The Nigeria Arm Wrestling Federation (NAWF) says it plans to select the country representatives for the 6th African Championship in Ghana at the 2023 Arm Wrestling Open Championship in Lagos. NAWF President Samuel Jackson revealed that the championships would be held on June 1 at the Captain's Bar, Ilupeju.
"Top winners at the Open Championship will be selected to represent the country at the African Championship in June in Ghana."
Jackson said that the African Championship in Accra, Ghana, would serve as qualifiers for the World Combat Games in Saudi Arabia in October. “It will also serve as the qualification tournament for the arm wrestling event of the African Games in Accra, Ghana, in March 2024."
The invitation has been sent to the Nigerian federation and signed by the AFA Secretary General, Julien Bounmsong, of the African Arm Wrestling Federation.
“Nigeria must confirm its participation in the African event by May 21, with a list of the names of the country’s representatives and their individual international passport numbers," he said.
Jackson said that was why all the top Nigerian arm wrestlers, male and female, have been invited to the June 11 Open Championship in Lagos. In the past, to make arm wrestling a great sport in Africa, the first edition of the African arm wrestling championship was held in Cairo, Egypt.
The second edition took place in Lagos. The third edition was held in Accra, Ghana, while the fourth edition was held in Dakar, Senegal.
The 11th edition of the African Championship took place in Lagos in 2022 and was won by Nigeria, while the twelfth edition has been slated to take place in Accra, Ghana, from June 21 to June 24.
