Anita Álvarez and Simone Manuel survived death; Simone Manuel qualified for World Championships

Posted : 16 August 2023
Anita Álvarez, an artistic swimmer, faced a dramatic and life-threatening situation during a competition. While in the pool, she lost consciousness and began to sink. Her coach, Andrea Fuentes, acted swiftly, leaping into the water from a height of 27 meters to save her. However, Manuel, the coach, landed poorly and suffered lung damage in the process. Despite this ordeal, both Anita and Manuel displayed remarkable courage and love for their sport.

This unforgettable incident unfolded during the solo artistic swimming final at the World Championships in Budapest in June 2022. The event was witnessed live by the audience and viewers on screens. Anita Álvarez, representing the United States, lost consciousness and began to sink into the water. Fuentes, her coach and a four-time gold medalist, rushed to her aid. Using swift and innovative actions, Fuentes managed to revive Anita, even using her pinky fingernail to stimulate consciousness.

This wasn't the first time Anita faced such a challenge. A year earlier, during a competition in Barcelona, she also lost consciousness after an exercise. On both occasions, Fuentes played a pivotal role in saving her.

Losing consciousness due to exertion is not uncommon among athletes who push their limits. In the pool, the risk is heightened, especially considering that artistic swimmers often hold their breath underwater for nearly a minute.

Recently, at the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Álvarez and her teammates achieved remarkable success, winning silver and bronze medals. This achievement served as excellent preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Álvarez expressed her feelings about returning to the sport, acknowledging the challenges she faced on her journey. Her determination to continue swimming, despite her physical setbacks, is evident. Following her incident in Budapest, doctors discovered that an iron deficiency affected her ability to produce hemoglobin, leading to fatigue. Given the demanding nature of artistic swimming, endurance is crucial, making her recovery even more remarkable.

Anita's journey to recovery included working with a psychologist to manage her breathing and mental state. While she doesn't recall the critical moments of the incident, she has gradually opened up about it and the subsequent challenges she overcame.

In another sporting realm, Germany's Simone Manuel faced an extraordinary challenge at the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka. Jumping from heights of 20 meters and 27 meters, he overcame fear and physical strain to compete. The climb itself was grueling, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius. The emotional and physical intensity experienced by jumpers is profound, with heart rates soaring as they prepare to leap from such heights.

In Manuel's case, an accident four years prior weighed heavily on his mind. During a jump in Portugal, he landed badly, resulting in injuries including pneumothorax and lung damage. Despite this setback, he continued pursuing his passion for cliff jumping and eventually qualified for the World Championships in Fukuoka.

Manuel's story exemplifies the unwavering dedication of athletes who often face challenges without significant funding or sponsors. He continued his pursuits out of pure love for the sport, jumping from great heights despite the risks.

The combination of dedication, passion, and courage displayed by individuals like Anita and Manuel underscores the true essence of sports and the remarkable resilience of athletes.

Amidst the controversies and complexities of the sports world, their stories serve as a reminder of the pure joy and determination that drive athletes to push their boundaries and never give up.
