Andreas Kron wins Vuelta a Espana Stage 2, thanks to teammate Tijl de Decker

Posted : 28 August 2023
Andreas Kron of Lotto Dstny secured a remarkable victory on Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Espana, displaying a powerful performance by attacking on the famous Montjuic hill. Kron's triumph held special significance as he dedicated it to the memory of Tijl de Decker, his fellow Lotto Dstny teammate who tragically passed away earlier in the week. Kaden Groves and Andrea Vendrame finished second and third respectively.

Amid damp conditions in Barcelona, Andreas Kron (Lotto Dstny) enjoyed a memorable day by clinching a solo victory on Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Espana. The Dane's win was marked by a poignant tribute to his late teammate, Tijl de Decker, as he crossed the finish line.

Kron's success was attributed to a well-timed attack during the steep section of the final climb, Castell de Montjuic. The recent rule changes also worked in his favor, with general classification times taken at the base of Montjuic due to anticipated storms. Stormy conditions also prompted alterations to the stage start, extending the neutralized rollout.

As the flag dropped, riders sought opportunities on the category 3 Coll de Sant Bartomeu climb. A breakaway comprising Andrea Piccolo, Matteo Sobrero, Javier Romo, and Joal Nicolau formed, later joined by Jetse Bol. Piccolo's proximity to the race lead compelled Team DSM to control the breakaway's gap.

Challenging conditions led to multiple punctures, affecting riders including Geraint Thomas and Remco Evenepoel. The breakaway's lead was maintained, and the chase group's efforts were hindered by crashes and narrow roads. The breakaway endured until the final third of the stage, when the damp conditions led to splits.

Andreas Kron seized the opportunity on the Montjuic climb, creating a gap that proved insurmountable. Kaden Groves secured second place, gaining bonus seconds, while Andrea Vendrame took third. Andrea Piccolo claimed the red leader's jersey and the white jersey for young riders, with Kron leading the points competition.
