World Athletics (WA), through its anti-doping body, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), has imposed a three-year ban on Nigerian athlete and jumper Goodness Iredia for the use of a banned substance.
The Athletics Integrity Unit stated that it found the presence and use of a prohibited substance (Metenolone and its metabolite) in the blood of the embattled young athlete.
Iredia tested positive for the anabolic steroid metenolone and its metabolite during an in-competition urine test at a college meet in Louisville, Kentucky, where he won the long jump on January 31, 2025.
The sample, analyzed by a WADA-accredited laboratory in Utah, confirmed the presence of the prohibited substance, for which Iredia had no therapeutic use exemption.
Iredia was provisionally suspended on February 26, 2025, after being notified of the adverse finding on February 19, 2025.
On March 5, 2025, the 20-year-old jumper admitted to the anti-doping rule violation by signing an acceptance form.
His ban was reduced from a four-year ban to three years under World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules due to his prompt admission.
His ineligibility period began on February 26, 2025, and will end in February 2028, with all results since January 31, 2025, disqualified.
Iredia, a Nigerian national champion and bronze medalist at the 2024 African Championships in Douala, joins other Nigerian athletes recently sanctioned for doping.
In May of last year, Iredia won both events at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, jumping 25 feet, 2.75 inches in the long jump and 53 feet, 3 inches (the seventh-best in the NCAA that season) in the triple jump.
