Amidst the ongoing age-cheating scandal that has almost marred the 2024 National Youth Games, stakeholders have called for decisive action to curb these malpractices.
Several state contingents have been embroiled in the age-cheating scandal, with allegations that some athletes have exceeded the age limit for registration.
However, Daniel Igali, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, has stated that sports federations in Nigeria need to improve their efforts to combat age-cheating in Nigerian sports.
Speaking at the 8th National Youth Games, Igali shared his personal experience with age-cheating and emphasized the need for collective action.
“I have also heard numerous reports about the age-cheating scenario here in Asaba, and I have experienced it myself.
“I believe every federation needs to take steps to address this issue.
“When I encountered it in wrestling, I conducted screenings and expelled some wrestlers who had come through the back door.”
As part of his commitment to developing young talent, Igali announced that six promising wrestlers from the Youth Games will join a training camp in Bayelsa State. The camp aims to refine their eating habits, training routines, and wrestling techniques.
Daniel Igali also hinted that he would not seek another term as president of the wrestling federation after spending 12 years in office.
“Every good thing must come to an end eventually. What we need to do now is find a very capable successor. I don’t think there will be any void in the wrestling federation, and I will be fully involved in supporting the new president to ensure we achieve our goals.”
