At the World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas, Botswana and South Africa showcased their prowess in the 4x400m event, claiming gold and silver respectively in Sunday night's final. In the heats, the African teams engaged in a thrilling battle down the home straight, with Botswana narrowly edging ahead of South Africa by a slim margin, securing their qualification for the Paris Olympic Games later this year.
The Botswana team, comprised of Busang Collen Kebinatshipi, Letsile Tebogo, Leungo Scotch, and Bayapo Ndori, delivered a commanding performance in the final, clinching victory in a world-leading time of 2:59.11. Meanwhile, South Africa, represented by Wayde van Niekerk, Gardeo Isaacs, Zakithi Nene, and Lythe Pillay in the heats, had Antonie Nortje stepping in for the final due to an injury concern, securing the silver medal with a commendable performance.
In other relay events, Nigeria showcased its strength by qualifying in all but one of the contested relays. The Nigerian teams displayed impressive performances, with the men's 4x100m relay team securing qualification behind Ghana and the women's 4x100m team clinching their spot with a strong showing. Despite missing out on Olympic qualification spots in the Bahamas, teams still have the opportunity to qualify by achieving top-two rankings globally by the cutoff date of June 30.
