The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has re-appointed US-based board member Victor Okorie as the Federation’s Performance Director and Liaison Officer in countries around the world.
The former athlete's re-appointment was made public on Monday by the President of AFN, Chief Tonobok Okowa.
Okorie, a silver medalist at the 2003 All African Games in Abuja, had served as AFN Performance Director between 2021 and 2023, but the position was rested alongside others when the AFN reconstituted its committees earlier this year.
Okowa, who is also a Vice President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), stated that there is a need for Okorie to continue with his position as Performance Director and Liaison Officer of the AFN, considering his achievements between 2021 and 2023.
Okorie worked with the technical team for Team Nigeria’s qualification at the 2024 World Relays in the Bahamas, where the country’s athletes picked four out of five relay tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The AFN President stated that Okorie’s experience in scouting young athletes for the country, coupled with his cordial relationship with the athletes in the U.S. and other parts of the world, are some of the reasons why the AFN decided to return him to his position as Performance Director and Liaison Officer.
He strongly believes that Victor Okorie will certainly add some fillip to the country’s build-up to the two major outings this year. His contribution will help the country achieve excellent results in major competitions, particularly the fast-approaching African Senior Athletics Championships in Cameroon and the Paris Olympics.
“The position has been vacant, and there is no other better person to fill it than Victor Okorie,” Okowa said.
The African Seniors Athletics Championships take place in Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon, from the 21st to the 26th of June, while the Paris Games are scheduled for July and August this year.
