Adam Yates emerged victorious in the first stage of the Tour de France in Bilbao, Spain, beating his twin brother Simon and claiming the coveted yellow jersey.
The UAE Team Emirates rider made a decisive move in the uphill finish, leaving his brother behind and securing his first-ever Tour de France stage win. Tadej Pogacar, a two-time winner, finished third in a sprint with a small group of riders.
Adam expressed his initial uncertainty about working with his brother during the race but received the go-ahead from his team to push forward.
He was thrilled with the win and delighted to share the experience with Simon, although he jokingly wished Simon hadn't pushed him as hard. Simon revealed that cramps hindered his speed towards the finish but saw an opportunity to join Adam when he saw his brother at the front.
The stage saw earlier crashes involving Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz, with Mas forced to withdraw from the race due to a shoulder injury.
The 182km route, starting and ending in Bilbao, featured challenging terrain and a decisive climb called Pike Bidea.
Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard initially led the way, but both Yates brothers overtook them on the descent, building a 20-second lead ahead of the chasing group.
Adam proved to have the most strength in the final 500m and secured the stage win, celebrating as he crossed the finish line.
Pogacar, despite concerns over his fitness following a wrist injury, clinched third place in the sprint, earning four bonus seconds and establishing an early advantage over Vingegaard.
The next stage, taking place in the Basque Country, will cover a 208km route from Vitoria-Gasteiz to San Sebastian, featuring five categorized climbs.
