Nigerian athletes are posting impressive times ahead of the National Athletics Trials scheduled to take place at the famous Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, South-South Nigeria, from the 16th to the 18th of June, 2024.
Sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma is the latest athlete to demonstrate her readiness for the National Trials, as she ran a Personal Best (PB) of 10.88 seconds to win her 100m quarter-finals race at the NCAA West Regional Preliminaries.
She shaved off 0.11 seconds from her Personal Best time set in 2022.
United States athlete Ariane Linton came second in 11.07 seconds, also a Personal Best for her, while another American, Jassani Carter, finished third in 11.09 seconds.
Rosemary Chukwuma's time of 10.88 seconds is the second-fastest time by a Nigerian woman in history, behind Blessing Okagbare.
Meanwhile, Yusuf Alli, Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, says they are ready to host the best National Athletics Trials in history, after hosting it in 2021 and 2022.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials will be used to select Team Nigeria Athletics for both the African Senior Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, and the Paris Olympics Games.
