In contrast to previous editions, this year's race will include a 5km fun run aimed at families and other recreational runners. The organizers advise interested participants to pick up their free registration forms at various locations, including the ECOWAS secretariat, the AFN Secretariat in Abuja, sports offices across the Six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory, and the Rugby Federation office in Abuja.
For this year's race, the starting point for the Half Marathon is the Ecowas Secretariat, while the 5km race will start at the Nnamdi Azikwe Express Way. Both races will conclude at Eagles Square, where additional fun activities and entertainment will be available.
Expressing delight with the planned innovations and expansion measures for the 2023 ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon, the Race Director, Gabriel Okon of Y & T Sports Management, urged all Nigerians to use this platform to integrate with their brothers and sisters across the sub-region. The theme for this year's race is promoting integration among ECOWAS citizens, encouraging people of all ages in Abuja and across the country to participate in large numbers.
Okon, former Performance Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, also revealed that several attractive prizes would be up for grabs at this year's race, highlighting the event's growth as the ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon becomes a larger race. He anticipates participants from across the sub-region, including Ghana, Senegal, Liberia, Gambia, and more.
