The Director of Sports for the Abia State Sports Council, Obioma George, has expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the athletes in the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, tagged Asaba 2024.
Comrade George stated in Asaba that the National Youth Games have seen tremendous improvements from Abia State, noting that the state has improved its performance compared to the last edition.
However, he expressed concern about the screening processes at the games, emphasizing the need for an improved screening exercise. He described the current situation as worrisome.
Comrade George explained that a large percentage of the athletes competing in Asaba are products of the inaugural secondary school games in Abia, and mentioned that the second edition of the school games will take place next year.
He noted that Abia has accumulated a total of 26 medals: 6 gold, 11 silver, and 9 bronze—four more than the number of medals won last year.
He also highlighted that preparations for the National Sports Festival in Ogun State have already begun.
The Director attributed the successes in the sports sector in Abia to the foresight of Governor Dr. Alex Otti, who has prioritized the development of sports, stating that Abians have never had it so good.
