2036 Olympics host Saudi Arabia and Qatar raises concerns about Gulf money influence

Saudi Arabia and Qatar's ambitions to host the Olympics in 2036 have raised concerns about the influence of Gulf money in the world of sports. While some countries with a stronger history and Olympic heritage, along with better human rights records, may be interested in hosting the event, the reality seems to favor the wealthy Gulf states.
Qatar's successful hosting of the World Cup has proven its ability to manage major sporting events. The Qatari Olympic Committee is leaving no stone unturned in its pursuit of the bid, learning from other global events and establishing itself as a formidable contender. However, questions about the treatment of foreign workers and policies towards refugees are conveniently brushed aside.
Saudi Arabia has embarked on a spending spree, investing billions in sports to distract from human rights violations. Its wealth fund's massive investments in various sports and teams serve as a refuge to divert attention from the country's controversial record. The influence of Gulf money has even reached football, with the acquisition of Newcastle and lucrative deals with top players.
Tennis, athletics, car racing, and boxing events are already taking place in Saudi Arabia, and the country's financial prowess extends beyond just hosting events. It invests in F1 and related industries, sponsors sports competitions, and acquires companies associated with video games.
The influence of Gulf money is undeniable, and it seems difficult to challenge or change the power it holds in the sporting world. Amnesty's concerns and promises of ostracism have not deterred the Gulf states from using sports as a means of whitewashing their image.
While other countries may have more to offer in terms of history, heritage, and values, the reality appears to be rigged in favor of the Gulf's extravagant spending power. Winning the bid to host the Olympics in 2036 would be the ultimate achievement for Saudi Arabia or Qatar, solidifying their positions as major players in the sporting arena.
