2025 World Athletics Relay: Nigeria to feature in four events

Nigeria will take part in four of the six events scheduled for the World Athletics Relays, which will be held in Guangzhou, China, between May 10 and 11.


The Nigerian contingent will feature in the men’s 4x100m relay, women’s 4x100m relay, mixed 4x100m relay, and mixed 4x400m relay.


According to the Secretary of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Israel Inwang Mfon, in selecting the four events, the Federation prioritized areas of comparative advantage and medal prospects.


It should be noted that at the 2024 edition of the World Athletics Relays in Nassau, Bahamas, all non-Olympic events were removed. Before then, events such as the 4x800m relay, 4x1500m relay, 4x200m relay, distance medley relay, shuttle hurdles relay, and 2x2x400m relay were included.


These non-Olympic events were removed in 2024, leaving only the Olympic events—namely, the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay. The mixed versions of these events will bring the total number of events at the 2025 edition in Guangzhou, China, to six.


Nassau 2024 featured five events, but the introduction of a mixed 4x100m relay at Guangzhou 2025 will increase the number to six.
