With less than 72 hours before the curtain falls on the 8th National Youth Games ongoing in Asaba, Delta State, Team Akwa Ibom has clinched its first gold medal at the U-15 championship.
After amassing seven silver and four bronze medals, the team rose to the occasion in para-athletics by securing gold.
Purity Okon Udoh showed no signs of disability as she made the longest throw to win the gold in shot put.
Coached by the experienced Ubong Isaac, a former state athlete, Purity displayed a high level of consistency from the preliminary rounds to the final of the competition.
Elsewhere, 11-year-old Hephzibah Gabriel Okon, who was the revelation of the last edition of the Games, won a bronze medal in the 800 metres (girls), while Jacinta Lawrence secured another bronze in the 400 metres (girls).
Team Akwa Ibom has accumulated a total of one gold, seven silver, and six bronze medals and is also in medal contention in other sports.
