Lekan Fatodu, Director General (D-G) of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), expressed confidence that Team Lagos would dominate the podium at the 2024 National Youth Games (NYG) in Delta.
Fatodu voiced this confidence while discussing Team Lagos's readiness for the 2024 National Youth Games. He recalled that Team Lagos finished second on the medals table at the last NYG, which was hosted and won by Delta in 2023.
Given the abundance of talent in the state and the rigorous training the team has undergone ahead of the games, Fatodu believes the state contingent will excel in the 2024 edition.
“It is a great pleasure to say that we have the most enthusiastic and optimistic young athletes, rising stars, who will be representing Lagos state at the National Youth Games.
“We had a positive experience at the zonal eliminations, which indicates that the state will perform well in the main games.
“After the zonal eliminations, we secured 10 slots out of about 16. Overall, in the NYG, we will be competing in approximately 34 out of 36 possible events.
“This demonstrates that Lagos state will be one of the most competitive teams, and we are thoroughly prepared to dominate the podium,” he said.
Fatodu added that the state's abundant talent means Lagos is a breeding ground for future sporting stars in the country.
“We have many young people who will become prominent names in sports, not just in Nigeria, but in Africa and the world.
“We have been closely monitoring their performances and providing them with the necessary training and support.
“We have engaged them in thorough training and camping, and we can confidently say that these athletes are stars in their own right,” he said.
Fatodu also noted that although Lagos has yet to win the NYG since its inception, he is confident the current team will win the 2024 edition.
“We came second at the last NYG, but this team is young and capable. We are not just aiming to be first; we also want to dominate.
“Some people have called this ambition excessive, but what is Lagos if not ambitious?
“Basically, we are looking to surpass our previous performance and compete effectively for the top spot.
“We also aim to increase not only the number of medals but also the pool of talent we develop from these games,” he said.
Fatodu concluded by stating that Team Lagos consists of 270 athletes competing in 34 events.
