2024 National Youth Games: South-South Zonal elimination begins in Benin

Posted : 30 August 2024

The South-South zonal eliminations, preceding the 2024 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, have begun in Benin, with Edo Rugby Boys and Girls teams edging out Team Bayelsa to secure qualifications for the Asaba Youth Games.

The event started as scheduled on Wednesday, August 28, in Benin, with the screening of athletes from various states in the South-South zone.

The seamless screening exercise paved the way for immediate competitions.

In the Rugby Boys event, Team Edo overpowered Bayelsa 25-20 in two-legged encounters, as the two states were the only contenders in the energy-sapping game. In the Girls category, it was an easy ride for Team Edo as their Bayelsan opponents did not show up.

Athletes from Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers are currently battling hard in the nine games featured in the South-South zonal contest for teams aiming to qualify for the 8th Edition of the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

In the Handball event, the Edo (female) team whitewashed Team Cross River 34-8 to qualify for the main games.

Games will continue tomorrow with the Edo Football team facing Akwa Ibom in the second match in the afternoon. Kick-off time is 12 PM, while Cross River is paired against Bayelsa in the first match at 9 AM.

The winners' game is scheduled for 4 PM at the Western Boys College, Benin.

In Basketball, Akwa Ibom faces Cross River (M) at 8:30 AM, while Team Edo plays against Bayelsa (F). Cross River will play against Bayelsa (M), and Akwa Ibom is also paired against Bayelsa.

Volleyball, Basketball, and Trado Sports - Abula events are staged at Wire Road and Etete Indoor Sports Hall, respectively.

The South-South zonal eliminations will come to an end on September 1 in Benin.
