As preparation for the 2024 National Youth Games, which is scheduled to take place in Asaba, Delta State for the second time, the Lagos under-15 teams are preparing for the Zonal Elimination Ball Games in Osogbo, Osun State.
The athletes' camps have been bustling with activity as they gear up for the 8th National Youth Games, designed to discover talent, foster development, and provide a platform to showcase their sporting prowess.
Speaking at the screening venue, Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, stated that the state aims to bring out the best athletes and select them according to the rules and principles set by the organizers of the National Youth Games, particularly for the Zonal Elimination Ball Games.
Fatodu emphasized that the purpose of the screening is to ensure transparency and integrity in the conduct of our affairs and to demonstrate that we have young athletes of the appropriate age competing in the Zonal Elimination Ball Games.
"Our selection process reflects the excellence we consistently achieve in Nigeria. We are confident that our young athletes will not only excel in Osogbo but will also win gold for Lagos," he said.
The athletes' training has been intensified, with trials conducted as they wrap up their initial camp in preparation for the competitive qualifiers in Osogbo, scheduled from August 29 to September 1.
Football, handball, basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, rugby, abula, cricket, and hockey are the sanctioned sports in which Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, and Ondo states will compete for qualification to represent the region at the National Games in Asaba.
As one of the states in the South Western region, the Lagos contingent, comprising 188 athletes (both male and female), will compete for nine slots when the qualifying series begins at the Osogbo Township Stadium.
Lagos athletes are leaving no stone unturned as they hone their skills, push their limits, and perfect their craft. From football players to handballers, each athlete is a testament to Lagos State's rich sporting talent.
Lagos, with its track record of investing in sports infrastructure and talent development, provides youths, particularly at the school level, with the opportunity to represent the state on the national stage. This unwavering commitment exemplifies the significant role of the state government, led by Gov. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, in using sports and other initiatives to keep youths off the streets.
