2024 National Athletics Trials: Dubem Amene wins 400m men's category run in Benin

Dubem Amene and Esther Elo Joseph secured impressive victories in the men’s and women’s 400m events respectively at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, marking significant milestones in their athletic careers. The atmosphere was electric as spectators cheered on the athletes who displayed exceptional speed and determination on the track.


Dubem Amene showcased his prowess by clinching his first national title with a commanding performance, clocking an impressive time of 45.44 seconds. This achievement underscored his dedication to the sport and marked a pivotal moment in his athletic journey. Following closely behind was Emmanuel Ojeli, who delivered a Season’s Best time of 45.69 seconds to secure second place, highlighting the intense competition among Nigeria’s top sprinters.


In third place, Dubem Nwachukwu also recorded a Season’s Best time of 46.70 seconds, demonstrating the high level of performance and competitiveness in the men’s 400m category. The race further saw Sikiru Adeyemi finish fourth with a time of 46.42 seconds, followed by Badmus Gafar in fifth place with 46.92 seconds. Chidi Okezie and Samson Nathaniel rounded out the field in sixth place, posting times of 47.13 seconds and 52.99 seconds respectively.


Meanwhile, in the women’s 400m race, Esther Elo Joseph delivered a stellar performance, crossing the finish line in 51.70 seconds to claim the national title. Her victory was not only a testament to her athletic abilities but also a reflection of her hard work and determination. Joseph’s ability to maintain her speed and composure throughout the race highlighted her status as one of Nigeria’s top female sprinters.


Veteran athlete Patience Okon-George put up a fierce challenge, finishing a mere 0.06 seconds behind Joseph with a time of 51.76 seconds, securing second place. The close finish between Joseph and Okon-George added to the excitement of the event and showcased the depth of talent in Nigerian women’s athletics.


Imaobong Nse-Uko demonstrated her strength and resilience by claiming third place in the women’s 400m event, crossing the line in 52.04 seconds. Her performance underscored the competitive nature of the race, with Omolara Ogunmakinju finishing closely behind in fourth place with a time of 52.15 seconds.


Overall, Dubem Amene and Esther Elo Joseph’s victories at the national championships not only solidified their positions as leading athletes in Nigeria but also served as inspiration to aspiring young athletes across the country.
