The two ivory towers are now set to host the 11th All-Africa University Games as contingents from African countries and their Nigerian counterparts arrive on time for the opening ceremony, expected to take place at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Sports Complex in Akoka.
About 120 universities in Nigeria and 36 others from across Africa are expected to compete in the Games, which will be co-hosted by UNILAG and Lagos State University (LASU).
UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, stated that the competition would showcase Nigeria’s cultural heritage among the community of African universities.
The Director of Sports at UNILAG, Joseph Awoyinfa, also noted that all facilities for the games, scheduled to end on September 29, have been put in proper shape.
This is the first time Nigeria will host the games since Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University staged the 2004 edition in Bauchi.
The Games are organized under the auspices of the Federation of African University Sports (FASU).
