Some Nigerian athletes participating in the African Seniors Athletics Championship in Cameroon have expressed their readiness to make the country proud as the event kicks off in Douala.
A world record holder in the 100m hurdles, Nigeria's Oluwatobiloba Amusan, and Favour Ofili are among the athletes who emerged as winners at the recently concluded 2024 Nigeria National Trials in Benin.
Both women, winners in the 100m, assured that Nigerian athletes will make the nation proud at the event.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) announced a strong list of 40 athletes to represent the country at the African Athletics Championship in Cameroon.
Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, and Chidi Okezie are some of Nigeria's biggest stars in Douala.
According to Amusan, "We are Nigerians, and we are going to Douala to show that spirit of ‘we can do it.'"
Ofili said, "I am confident we will top the medals table in Douala."
About 750 athletes from 50 countries are expected to compete for honors in 45 events at the championship, which started in 1979 in Dakar, Senegal.
Team Nigeria Athletics is in Douala, Cameroon, with 40 athletes—20 male and 20 female—and they are set to compete in 20 events.
