2023 Senior African Wrestling Championship begins, team Nigeria depart for Tunisia

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation contingent has departed for Tunisia as the 2023 Senior African Wrestling Championships get underway in Hammamet, Tunisia. The contingent, led by the president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Dr. Daniel Igali, left Nigeria in the early hours of Wednesday.

Team Nigeria departed Nigeria from Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, via Air Maroc and is expected to be received on arrival by the hosting Federation and the Nigerian Embassy in Tunisia.

The competitors will be participating in freestyle male, female, Greco-Roman, and traditional wrestling. Speaking briefly before the team’s departure, Dr. Igali expressed optimism for a good outing despite the technical challenges the Federation faced in the last couple of days.

The NWF President, Dr. Daniel Igali, acknowledged the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development for the timely sponsorship intervention that has made it possible for the contingents to depart for Tunisia ahead of the African championships.

Dr. Igali equally appreciated the government of Bayelsa State for the continuous support rendered to the NWF, especially the junior national team, as well as the ongoing training camp held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

Meanwhile, during the championships, apart from participating in the senior and junior categories, Nigeria will also engage in a 2-day training camp, including the qualification series for the African Beach Games, coming up later in June this year.

Team Nigeria's Final List Junior Team: Onovwiomogbohwo Harrison, Izolo Stephen Simon, and Bekefula Tarilayefa; Senior Team: Mercy Genesis, Christiana Ogunsanya, Jumoke Adekoye, Adekuoroye Mercy, Opuene Patience, Kolawole Esther, Oburodudu Blessing, Reuben Hannah, Ebipatel Mughenbofa, Ebi Biogos, Ebikewenimo Welson, Seitokumo Richard, Braveman Oyeinkeperemo, Newlife Ebikeme Oyobi, Ulabo Solomon, and Progress Benson.
