Nigeria continues to lead the way at the ongoing 13th African Games as Athletics kick off in Accra.
Team Nigeria's hopes of winning more medals came under the spotlight as their potential in sprints finished strongly in the men’s and women’s 100 heats.
Usheoritse Itsekiri clocked 10.19s (-0.1), emerging as the fastest Nigerian in the heats and finishing second overall behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who ran 10.15s.
Furthermore, Ekanem won his heat with a time of 10.43s, while Sunday Israel Okon finished 2nd in his heat (10.55s).
The three Nigerian women competing in the 100-metre heats have qualified for the semi-final.
Justina Tiana Eyakpobeyan, who ran 11.43s, won her heat and advanced as the 2nd fastest overall; Olayinka Olajide won her heat in 11.51s; and Blessing Ogundiran also won in 11.65s.
Meanwhile, Brittany Ogunmekun will be competing for Nigeria in the women’s 400m after serving five years in the US military.
