The Nigeria Athletics Federation (AFN) Technical Director, Coach Samuel Onikeku, has set a target, expecting Team Nigeria to win at least 10 gold medals in athletics as podium events get underway.
“We came to compete and win medals. The Nigeria athletics team has always been winning in the past editions of the African Games, and we believe this edition will not be an exception.
“We have already started some finals, and we believe that from Tuesday, medals will start coming from every angle. Ten gold medals are always enough to win the athletics events. That has always been our standard, and we want to reach that level. Ten gold medals will help Nigeria to comfortably secure the 2nd position.”
Coach Onikeku shared his aspirations to encourage Nigerian fans just before the commencement of the 110m hurdles and triple jump qualifications.
Team Nigeria has already qualified for the semi-finals in five athletics events in Accra.
