Janet Mensah, a student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, has emerged as a double gold medalist in the 100m and 200m women’s races, beating stiff competition from Nigerian runners.

In an exclusive interview, however, Mensah described Nigeria as the place to be during the ongoing All African University Games.

On the sidelines of the race, Mensah said that she loved the atmosphere in Nigeria.

The 11th FASU Games are co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

An elated Mensah also commended the support from Nigerian fans.

"The atmosphere here is great, and I can say Nigeria is the best place to be because I enjoyed the massive support.

"The 200m gold medal is my first, but I have won some others in the past. This medal definitely means a lot to me, and I will cherish it.

"Team Ghana is doing well because we practice a lot, and we are on top of our game.

"I have a high target to represent my country in international competitions, either in the African Games or the Olympics someday," she said.

The silver medalist in the women’s 200m race, Zeinab Awuai, from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, said that although her second-place finish was an underperformance, she was happy to win silver.

"I am really happy, although I was very tired, which is why I wasn't able to meet my target time. But I’m really happy to have gotten a silver medal in the 200m.

"I was tired because I participated in the 100m final this morning, and in the afternoon, I also ran the 200m final.

"It wasn’t up to my expectations, but I’m really happy to have won a medal," she said.

The bronze medalist, Morenikeji Sulaimon, from the Federal University of Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), on her part, said that winning bronze was not bad.

"I feel good because my 100m performance wasn’t great, but I tried my best in the 200m. This is not my first international competition," she said.

Awuai, who won silver in the 100m, also got bronze in the 200m, while Sulaimon finished second to win silver.
