11th FASU Games: Mauritius athlete wins Men's High Jump

Posted : 26 September 2024

Joseph Dezadin, a final-year student at the University of Mauritius, has emerged as the gold medalist in the Men's High Jump at the ongoing All African University Games (FASU 2024).

In an exclusive interview, Dezadin claimed that the jump that earned him the medal was not his personal best.

Speaking on the sidelines of the medal presentation held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Sports Center in Akoka, he stated that he was not new to international competitions.

The ongoing 11th FASU Games are being co-hosted by UNILAG and Lagos State University (LASU).

Dezadin, who faced stiff competition from the Ghanaian athletes who finished second and third, expressed his happiness at winning the gold medal.

“It is an amazing feeling to have won the gold medal today, even though the jump that led to it is not my personal best. I thank God that it was enough to win the gold medal.

“I have represented Mauritius in the last African Games, but I did not win any medals, so I know what that pressure feels like. I just try to improve and come back stronger.

“High Jump requires a lot of practice, dedication, and commitment, which I am willing to give in the near future,” he said.

The silver medalist, Philip Boaleng from the University of Ghana, revealed the secret behind Ghana's dominance in athletics.

“Team Ghana is dominating the podium in athletics because we are passionate about the sport, we don’t take our training lightly, and we also have good coaches.

“Next time, I should be able to win the gold medal. All I have to do is train more. High Jump is a bit more difficult than what people think,” he said.
